So two Gas giants make a far off solar system a look alike. Kind of saying a unicycle is a look alike of a car.
When they find a solar system with eight planets in the same configuration, maybe then.

The only reason we aren't seeing additional Earth-sized planets is because we don't have instrumentation precise enough to detect them. As time goes on we'll discover smaller and smaller planets until we find ones the size of Earth and smaller.
Obviously, then at that point we should be notified! Its probably also worth noting that no extra-solar planets have been observed directly as I understand it.

But Pluto joins Eris and Ceres.
8 Planets and 3 Dwarf Planets.

Depends how you define "observed". If you mean "Have they got streams of observational data that proves beyond any reasonable doubt that planet-sized objects are in orbit around given stars?" then the answer is yes, they've been directly observed. If you mean "Have they done a Polaroid?" then the answer is no.
Technically the streams of data say something is moving in front of those stars that their luminosity has a cycle, or that the star wobbles in conjunction of a large mass orbiting it. From this we get planets, but what if they were very large alien ships? It's indeed most certainly planets, but they have yet to be directly imaged, which is extremely unlikely at the moment as the stars outshine the reflections.

Cuz it would be hideously expensive to exploit those resources. Not to mention getting several thousand tons of ore back on Earth from outer space for each haul is, well, not really doable currently.
When we invent anti-gravity engines and free energy to run it all (e.g. antimatter) then maybe.
Capturing NEA's would be much better and easier. I had always wondered why they didn't do this in Stargate SG-1. A local source of Naquada would have been useful.
